Description

God In His Mercy Lend Her Grace (The Lady of Shalott) is my favourite story of all my figurative images. This imagery was inspired by Loreena Mckennitt's version of The Lady of Shalott on her album The Visit. I recently wrote a letter to the song artist thanking her for her inspiration in my life. Throughout my five years at high school, my art teachers played daily Loreena Mckennitt's The Visit. I now own all of her albums as my art music, in which I find compelling inspiration.

Trapped in a bower by a spell that forbids her to look outside, the Lady admires Camelot through a magic mirror, whose scenes she weaves into tapestries. One day, she sees Lancelot in her mirror and risks the outcome of her curse to find him. The lady inscribes her name on the side of a boat and begins the journey to Camelot, but she dies by the curse before she can reach her destination.

The image portrayed in this painting is based on the final verse of Alfred Lord Tennyson's The Lady of Shalott, where Lancelot finds her dead on the riverside:

But Lancelot mused a little space;
He said, "She has a lovely face;
God in his mercy lend her grace,
The Lady of Shalott."
